Kristel Gomez
Connection: Kristel and I met in January of 2008 when we were randomly matched to be roommates while studying abroad in London. We instantly clicked and spent a semester making memories with some of the other Americans, but mostly the natives. We kept in touch and after we both finished college we decided to move to LA to start the next chapter of our lives here. Kristel has always been ahead of the times with fashion, culture, and cuisine, so I’m excited to share her q&a and connect her with the iivy.

On health & wellness
What is something you changed in your life, that changed your life for the better? I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease in 2022 and it very much changed my perspective on health and wellness. I learned that having good health is by far the most important thing in your life so learning to prioritize myself before anyone else was the first step. Practices such as mindfulness, meditation, and therapy were crucial for managing my stress, which can exacerbate autoimmune symptoms, and of course, having a balanced diet and exercise plan.
What advice, inspiration, or motivation can you share to encourage someone to take care of their body, mind, or soul? Nurture your relationships. Surround yourself with supportive and positive people. Investing time in meaningful relationships can boost your emotional well-being. Also, make time for activities that bring you joy and fulfillment. Whether it’s a hobby, creative outlet, or simply relaxing, prioritize what makes you happy.
What is your favorite health and/or wellness tip? I guess this is not a product per se, but my favorite health activity is lymphatic massages. It makes me feel so light and rejuvenated after. They help with blood flow, flushing out toxins and of course who doesn’t want to smooth out some visible cellulite.
What’s your favorite thing to do with your friends? One of the favorite things to do with friends is to spend quality time together, whether that’s enjoying a meal at a restaurant, hiking, checking out a movie. I also notice that it always differs depending on the friend!

Tell us about your business / role: As a female cinematographer, my role encompasses a blend of technical expertise and artistic vision. I work closely with directors, production designers, and other crew members to contribute to the overall vision of the film, ensuring that the visuals align with the story.
Were you always interested in this line of work or did you fall into it? Yes! As far as I can remember I've always been a major cinephile, but also in love with photography. My father gifted me my first camera when I was just a kid and it just clicked right there and then that I had to work with cameras. The journey has been long and at times daunting but slowly but surely I feel like I am paving my way.
What is your favorite part of your work? My favorite part of working as a cinematographer is the creative collaboration involved in bringing a story to life. I love the process of interpreting a script visually, making choices about lighting, camera angles, and composition that enhance the narrative and emotional impact. Being able to visually move a story forward is so fulfilling.
What advice would you give someone who is looking to get into the same industry? Explore different positions within the industry to find where your passion lies. Understanding various aspects of filmmaking can enhance your versatility and skill set. The film industry can be challenging and competitive. Stay committed, be prepared for setbacks, and keep pushing forward.

What have you purchased recently that feels worth mentioning? I feel a little a cliche saying this because I know as you get older different things bring you excitement, but I purchased a mini steam power washer and it has changed my life. What do you never leave the house without? I can't leave my house without hand lotion. Having dry hands makes me angsty! Artist/Album Recommendation: I am a creature of comfort when it comes to music so I stick with my grunge oldies. I love adding some classic tracks from artists like Fleetwood Mac and Led Zeppelin to balance out. Podcast Recommendation: I really like Arm Chair with Dax Shepard. I like how his episodes can transition from comedy to more serious topics. The episode featuring Kristen Bell offers insights into relationships and personal growth was great. Movie Recommendation: The Holdovers. Beauty Product: The Elta MD tinted sunscreen. As someone who can't wear makeup to work but doesn't want to look like a zombie either, this is the perfect product. Skincare Recommendation: I used to work at a organic skincare company here in Los Angeles and I still swear by their products. It is called Silvana's Skin Care. Also probably the best facials in town. Recipe: Right now my favorite go to breakfast is oatmeal banana protein pancakes. I blend half a banana, 3/4 of oatmeal, protein powder of choice, 1/4 coconut milk, and 1/4 egg whites. They are so delicious topped with fruit and some good organic maple syrup. Favorite store in another town, state or country: My favorite store is a perfumery in London called Floris. It's the oldest perfume store in the country and it dates back to the 1700s. The store is a time warp, which is why I love to visit every-time I am in London Town. Small Business Recommendation: My best friend runs a handmade ceramic shop called Kiki Co and she makes the most amazing pieces.
